Conway Twitty

Conway Twitty, nome d'arte di Harold Lloyd Jenkins (Friars Point, Mississippi, 1 settembre 1933 – Springfield, 5 giugno 1993), è stato un cantante e cantautore statunitense.

Il suo nome è iscritto dal 1999 fra quello delle celebrità della Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum di Nashville, Tennessee.
Fra i suoi successi dei tardi anni cinquanta figurano lo standard di origine irlandese Danny Boy, incisa su 45 giri nel 1959, e la cover del brano musicale del 1957 di Paul Anka, Diana.
Il suo brano Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man, cantato in coppia con la folksinger Loretta Lynn, è stato inserito nella colonna sonora del videogioco "Grand Theft Auto".

Biografia
Nato nella cittadina di Friars Point ma cresciuto ad Helena, in Arkansas, è stato uno dei maggiori artisti country del Novecento. Sebbene sia maggiormente ricordato come tale, è stato anche un cantante di successo in altri generi, fra cui il rock and roll degli albòri, il rockabilly, il rhythm and blues e la stessa pop music.
Fino al 2006, ad oltre dieci anni dalla morte - avvenuta all'età di neppure sessant'anni per un aneurisma dell'aorta addominale che lo ha colto mentre si trovava in tournée - deteneva il record di dischi singoli maggiormente venduti (oltre quaranta) classificati nelle Billboard country chart. A scalzarlo da tale posizione è stato George Strait, con il quarantunesimo hit fatto registrare con il singolo Give It Away.
Il nome di battesimo di Conway Twitty fu scelto da un prozio del cantante in onore dell'attore del cinema muto Harold Lloyd. È sepolto al Sumner Memorial Park di Gallatin, contea di Sumner (Tennessee).
